Deborah Throm, Attorney
Deborah Throm
Deborah may have attended classes at Parliament in the House of Commons in London, but don't worry – she won't show up in a powdered wig. She also met her husband of 16 years in London and is an avid world traveler. Any fears of visiting foreign countries were quelled when she worked with the international sales force of Silicon Graphics, Inc. They taught her how to avoid insulting people in numerous languages. (She might even tell you her name in Japanese.)
As a family law attorney, Deborah derives a great deal of satisfaction from helping clients resolve conflict. She's an eternal optimist who has a talent for showing clients in the throes of an emotional separation or divorce that resolution is indeed possible. She was one of the first family law attorneys in Orange County, North Carolina to restrict her case load to exclusively collaborative family law cases and mediation. She offers clients out-of-court settlement options for resolving difficult separation and divorce disputes, which she believes helps people to move forward and become more successful co-parents.
Deborah is such an empathetic listener, in fact, that colleagues often stop by to chat and seek advice. In other words, the party is always in Deborah's office. You might say Deborah is an attorney with a heart. (Yes, Virginia, they do exist!)
Her Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communication from San Jose State University (with Distinction, mind you) was really about studying conflict resolution. So, when it comes to helping people settle their differences, Deborah knows her stuff. She even currently serves as a private mediator and facilitator for the NC State Board of Education, Department of Public Instruction, mediating and facilitating disputes between school districts and parents of children with special needs. Phew!
She received her Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Golden Gate University School of Law and is admitted to the North Carolina State Bar. Prior to her law career, Deborah interned with the U.S. Department of Labor in San Francisco and has a history of public service, which includes serving on non-profit boards of directors for child advocacy organizations.
In her spare time (what spare time?), Deborah volunteers for Cornucopia House, Cancer Support Center in Chapel Hill, and she loves to relax with her husband and two young children.
